Alternatives to residential care (extra care housing)

Extra care housing offers a real alternative to residential care and enables people to remain as independent as possible.

Self contained accommodation
Self contained accommodation

Extra care housing allows you to retain independence while being assisted with tasks such as washing, dressing, going to the toilet or taking medication. It can sometimes provide an alternative to a care home.

It comes in many built forms, including:

  • blocks of flats
  • bungalow estates
  • retirement villages

Extra care housing gives residents a choice of their own tenancy, or allows them to become owner/occupiers, shared owners, or leaseholders. They can also offer access to 24 hour care on site (flexible care packages according to need).
