Eligibility for support

After your assessment, we have guidance called "eligibility criteria" to work out if you are eligible for adult social care services.

The eligibility criteria are set by the government as part of legislation in the 2014 Care Act.

How do the criteria work?

The eligibility criteria for adults are based on identifying how a person’s needs affect their ability to live their life, and how this impacts on their wellbeing.

The criteria considers whether a person’s needs:

  • arise from or are related to a physical or mental impairment or illness
  • make them unable to achieve two or more specified outcomes
  • as a result of being unable to meet these outcomes, there is likely to be a significant impact on the adult’s wellbeing

An adult’s needs are eligible where they meet all three of these conditions
